Tumors in the Mediastinum
The area behind the breastbone and between the lungs is the mediastinum. It contains essential organs and tissue including the heart and esophagus. It is possible for tumors to form in this region of the body. Even when mediastinal tumors are not cancerous, they can still cause serious problems if left untreated. The course of treatment depends on the type of tumor and where it is located. It is necessary to remove any cancerous tumor present in the mediastinum in order to prevent or mitigate damage to the tissue and organs in that area, as well as to stop the cancer from spreading. Our surgeons are skilled at providing mediastinal mass excision as a part of the treatment process.
Beneath the breastbone in the front part of the chest is the thymus gland. This integral part of the immune system makes white blood cells. Thymoma is the formation of malignant tumors in the thymus gland. Early stages of thymoma may not cause any symptoms but when symptoms do occur, they include:
- Chest Pain
- Difficulty Swallowing
- Weigh Loss
- Poor Appetite
- Shortness of Breath
In many instances, thymoma is discovered due to imaging such as a chest X-Ray or CT scan. Excision is required to remove the tumor and radiation may follow. Your medical team will discuss the details of your treatment recommendations and ensure that you feel prepared for every step of the process.
